Alumina Products: Applications, Specs & RFQs

Aluminium oxide (Al2O3), commonly referred to as alumina, is one of the most popular engineering materials worldwide. It combines superb mechanical properties with decent temperature performance, yielding intermediate and finished goods that can withstand extreme operating conditions. The relative abundance of aluminium oxide also renders it fairly low cost. This leads to alumina products exhibiting some of the greatest price-to-performance ratios of any technical ceramic on the market.

Saint-Gobain is one of the industry’s leading developers of abrasive materials for machining applications. Through decades of concerted research and development (R&D), we have managed to curate a range of high-performance alumina products that excel at material removal.

Our dedication to continued technical innovation has led to numerous technological breakthroughs that directly impact end-users; for example, greater efficiency at reduced cost. We have worked to continually satisfy perennial customer needs with next-generation alumina products that resolve age-old issues.

Saint-Gobain Alumina Products: MA88 Monocrystalline Grains

MA88® is our flagship abrasive grain based on high purity alumina. It is derived from Bayer alumina electro-fused with titanium oxide (TiO2) and trace level additives. This yields extremely hard monocrystalline abrasive grains surrounded by microfractured fine crystals, creating numerous cutting facets with long-lasting grinding efficiency. We supply FEPA-size MA88® grains with nominal particle size distributions (PSD) ranging across five set regimes, from oversize to fine-grain PSDs. Our MA88® alumina products are available with weak and strong grain shapes, with four overarching product lines serving two primary application areas.

Applications of Our Alumina Products

Our alumina products serve one of two primary markets based on whether or not the grains have been surface treated. Untreated MA88® grains are routinely leveraged in vitrified bond and resin bond grinding wheels. They offer good longevity in a wide range of bonded grinding applications including cylindrical grinders, mounted wheels, disc cutters, and more. Treated grains are preferred for precision resin bond applications only.
