MCA 1360 Alumina Zirconia

Alumina-Zirconia Grains

Comprised of fine primary corundum and an alumina-zirconia crystalline structure, MCA 1360® is extremely wear resistant and one of the toughest and most durable blasting materials in the abrasives industry. Saint-Gobain Abrasive Grains' unique manufacturing process fuses zircon sand and alumina to create particles with high hardness and extreme toughness. Applications range from precision surface preparation of turbine blades and other jet engine components prior to application of ceramic or other coatings, orthopedic implants, and the industrial blast cleaning of roadway bridges and ship hulls.

A hard, extremely tough grain that lasts much longer than traditional abrasives, MCA 1360 is the best-performing fused blasting media used in blast finishing today. The combination of hardness and toughness offers significant advantages:

  • Reduced consumption due to excellent balance of hardness and toughness of alumina zirconia (also reduced blasting abrasive waste)
  • Less formation of dust due to the slower breakdown rate
  • Less inclusions in the substrate because the particle morphology and lower hardness greatly reduces embedment in surface
  • Less formation of stresses in the surface due to shorter blasting process time (reduced amount of impacts)
  • Lower downtime of the equipment due to longer lifetime of the material and fewer cleaning cycles
  • Faster preparation of the required surface properties
  • Higher productivity/capacity without investment
  • Lower labor cost per part
  • Reduced total cost per unit
